In the article Hacked again? After investigation, Equifax says no by Liz Moyer, she investigates what actually happened and if they are truly to blame for the newest hack. In a statement that Equifax released to the public, they stated that "the issue involves a third-party vendor that Equifax uses to collect website performance data." However, the malicious code was then run on their site. Due to this, Equifax took the initiative to work on the customer help page and disabled it so they could resolve the issue. The company is taking care to let the public know that no more data was released and those that the malicious software had affected, should not blame them for it was not the fault of Equifax but instead another company that they work with.
Since this is now their second breach in less than one year, the IRS has decided to suspend the 7.2 million dollar contract they have setup. Between exposing "personal information for roughly half the US population" and now spreading malicious code to those visiting the site, the company has a long way to go until they have the people's trust again. Until then, the company says that they will prepare for any additional cyber attacks that might be attempted after being breached in two different forms in such rapid succession.
I feel that it is very important that the public be aware of the fact that Equifax is not as secure as we would hope since they hold such important information on each and every one of us. It is especially important that we stay up to date on any information that is given to the public through the media on updates about this company and hopefully as we continue to learn of how unprotected they really are, that they start to seriously work on improving their security systems. Due to this being the second hack that has occurred at this company within one year, I truly feel that the government needs to put more restrictions and laws into place to make sure our information is being kept as safe as it can get. Hopefully computer security experts are working on perfecting and updating their codes right at this moment and keep us up to date as they go. The best way to stay updated on this topic is through reliable news sources like ABC or NBC.
