Article: The Evolution of Malware
By: Fred Touchette
Date Published: 10/2/2015
In the article by Fred Touchette, he talks about the history of malware from where it originally started to where it had been in 2015 when this article was written. He was quick to point out that it only took "six years after the first personal computer was introduced" for someone to create and attack others using malware. The first instance of this was in 1982 and was connected to a game, which would then clone itself onto any new disk that come in contact with the computer. Originally, it seemed just to be something that causes annoyance; however, in the 1980's, malware had become malicious. In other words, it evolved to "destroying data or corrupt systems." Over the years, malware continued to evolve and become more dangerous and costly to the systems that it infected; however, once 2013 rolled around, the game changed even more.
In 2013, Ransomware become a very large threat. Once a system became infected with ransomware, the user would be locked out of the system with no way of reaching any information or data that they may need until they pay or complete some ransom request. Once that was completed, they would get the "private key used to encrypt them," referring to all of the data and information in the system that was previously locked up. At the end of informing the reader of how malware has evolved, Touchette goes on to say that we need to prepare for the future. To do this, we need to stay vigilant, increase our security and keep our information backed up to some reliable resource.
I feel that it would be best for the general public to know and understand that malware in constantly changing and evolving into something that is harder to protect against. However, security experts will do their best to help keep things secure by com
ing out with better code that can protect against more malware. It is always best for users to pay attention to what sites they are visiting and if they deem it to be safe. Hopefully as malware continues to progress, the laws and regulations will continue to progress with them so that criminals can be tried and convicted of their crimes as they deserve to be. It is best to stay updated on any current malware issues present and stay up to date on any update security systems might put out to the public.
