Article: Android vs iOS security: Which is better?
By: Lucas Mearian
Date published: Aug 7, 2017
In this article, the author tackles the topic of Android and iOS security and whether they are truly safe or not. The author of the article believes that Android is a larger target for attacks and places this mainly on the fact that "Android is basically open source, anyone can look at what's in Android." Along with this, Android has a habit of not releasing updates for everyone's access, unlike Apple. A study from this year shows that only .7% of the Android operating systems were running the newest update, Nougat. One thing that Lucas Mearian states is helping Apple is that "Apple doesn't release its source code." So, by the information given, it could be reasonable to say that Apple's iOS is safer. However, the author also makes a point to state that iOS attacks also occur. They may be rarer than what happens on Android, but they are still there.
So, the question is: What is Android doing to better protect their systems? In a quote by Symantec security experts, due to "security improvements in Android's architecture "have made it increasingly difficult to infect mobile phones."" Along with this, it is believed that the newest OS being released by Google may not be released to the public helping to secure updated devices. To end his article, Mearian made sure to mention that even with security measures in place, it is always best to try to stick to good practices when visiting web sites or downloading anything onto your device.
This article didn't come as a surprise to me since I have been looking at this topic for a little bit now. What did catch my eye though was the fact that at the time of this article, only .7% of all Android devices had the newest update. The best thing to do it to make sure your mobile device is up to date as well as keep practicing good habits when going online or downloading anything. Hopefully Google will keep working on any old devices to try to keep them as protected as possible for the future.
