DDoS-for-Hire?

Article: DDos-for-Hire Service Launches Mobile App

In one of Brian Krebs most recent articles, he talks about Ragebooter, a service that paying customers could use to knock individuals and Web sites offline. These attacks are known as DDoS attacks or a distributed denial of service attack and cause the owner of sites a massive headache and lots of money. Krebs originally wrote about this service in May of 2013 after it made an appearance, and now they have created a mobile version as well. When the article was published, the application could be found on the Google Play Store under the name Ragebooter DDoS Stresser Stress Testing Tool. However, I tried looking it up out of curiosity, and it appears that it can no longer be downloaded from the Play Store.
So how much does it typically cost to pay for a DDoS attack? While looking around online, digitalattackmap.com stated that on the black market, you can pay $150 for a week-long attack and that more than 2000 DDoS attacks are "observed world-wide by Arbor Networks" daily. By having a mobile application that can do just this, the attack can really have a negative outcome. By making this more available, they are allowing the number of attacks per day to greatly increase. To close his article, Brian Krebs brings in the point that the FBI had released "an advisory warning that the use of booter’s services... is punishable under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act," helping to put a warning out there for anyone interested in using a DDoS provider service.
The thing that really struck me about this article was the fact that a DDoS attack provider had made its way onto mobile devices as an application. However, after looking up the application on the Google Play Store myself and not being able to find it makes me feel a little better. I feel that it is important to know Krebs’ warning that he put in at the end reminding people that this behavior is illegal and can be punished by law. I am glad that Google's security caught up with the app and took it down and hope they continue doing this with any future applications that allow illegal behavior.
